That's one view of this subject. Here's another:

"There was a young lady of Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a Tiger;
They came back from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the Tiger."

Well, "petite" in modern English means "small" when applied to women's clothing, and "short" when applied to the women themselves. This recent borrowing has favorable or neutral connotations. However, the older borrowing, "petty", has s number of specialized meanings, most of them with unfavorable connotations.

And I can't think of an English word that's pronounced anything like the French "redette".

And here's another good one from the same tribe:

The Great Spirit is not perfect: it has a good side and a bad side. Sometimes the bad side gives us more knowledge than the good side.

RB,#281, re: "RR do you know the child tales "Blue" and "Roux" Beard ?"

I'm familiar with the French folk tale about Bluebeard, a man who marries and murders a lot of women and is finally caught and killed by the family of his last wife before he can murder her. There are similar folk tales in many other cultures, and of course real life crimes of this sort get news coverage every once in a while. However, a Google search on "Redbeard" and "Barbe Roux" didn't turn up anything, even though I definitely remember seeing both the English and French versions of the name in print, possibly in stories about pirates.

re: "are you invoking the great white spirit " wakan Tanka" of zohme Indian tribes

Yes, I was. "Wakan Tanka", often called simply "The Great Spirit" is one of the best known deities in the Lakota (Sioux) pantheon.

After I posted the above, the name "Barbarossa" popped into my head, so I ran a google on it. This name is the Italian form of "Barbe Roux" or "Redbeard", and he was a historical figure of the late middle ages:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I,_Holy_Roman_Emperor

However, Barbarossa's Wiki bio portrays him in a very favorable light, as a great leader who got the whole-hearted support of most of the competing political and ethnic factions in the Empire and also made meaningful reforms, such re-establishing the Roman civil legal code to balance the judicial code of the Catholic Church. So I see no reason to associate him with Bluebeard in any way. And the Italians gave him his nickname because we was a German who did indeed wear a red beard.

However, as I was doing the research on Barbarossa, the term "barbarian" came to mind, and I wondered if this pejorative for foreigners hasever been associated with the concept of "red beard". So I ran a google on that word, and it turns out to have an entirely different, though interesting, origin:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian

"The Greeks used the term barbarian for all non-Greek-speaking peoples, including the Egyptians, Persians, Medes and Phoenicians, emphasizing their otherness, because the language they spoke sounded to Greeks like bar bar bar,"

All I can say is that after Trump threatened to put back the sanctions on Iran, the Iranian government switched from the US dolar to the Euro for their international transactions.

Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her.

But once they are in hand,, he or she alone must

decide how to play the cards in order to win the game.

I can only find one reference to a card game in the works of Voltaire. It's in Chapter 22 of "Candide" and all the players are cheating.

Hoping everyone is doing good, and has a wonderful day.

Take a few minutes to listen within.

Never know what you may learn by doing so.

The feeling of love is well worth a quite mind.

You will have wonderful surges forward.

Then there must be a time of consolidating

before the next forward surge.

Accept this as part of the process

And never become downhearted.

GOD SPOKE TO ME

This is true,
but it's not always wise
to try and figure out
if the Eternal Now
is in a forward surge
or a time of consolidation.

May your glass be ever full,

May the roof over your head be always strong,

And may you be in Heaven

Half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Irish Toast

I've always liked this toast, must be the Irish in me.

May your life forever be happy.

May your friends always be there to help you.

May you make the world around you a Heaven on Earth.

May you realize the only devil is the one you make.... so don't make one.

Sky, #297:

I like both the Irish original and your version,
but I'm more fond of the prayer pre-christian Irish
claimed the ancient Saxons said before meals:
"Good bread, good meat, good gods, let's eat."

IMO, Aristotle was trying to reconcile Plato's "theory of forms" with theories that can be derived through scientific investigation:

Plato writes: "Since these things are so, we must agree that that which keeps its own form unchangingly, which has not been brought into being and is not destroyed, which neither receives into itself anything else from anywhere else, nor itself enters into anything anywhere, is one thing,"
